Some functions within WR4 create temporary files which after time are no longer necessary and can safely be deleted.
IMPORTANT the files deleted in housekeeping are shown below.
Folders involved
[yourWindowsUser]this is the Windows user you are logged in as
[WR4DefaultDatabases] - this is the folder you have set in your WR4 preferences in File Locations and Database.
[WR4DefaultExports] - this is the folder you have set in your WR4 preferences in File Locations and Exports.
If you have set WR4DefaultDatabases and/or WR4DefaultExports to a folder which you also use to store data from other applications, then you should take note of the following details and only run Housekeeping if you are sure that it will not affect other applications. We recommend that you do not share your WR4 folders with other applications.
Files affected
1. All files in WR4 downloads folder [yourWindowsUser]\Documents\WildlifeComputing\Recorder4\Downloads
2. All temporary files created by WR4 as part of the species update process. These are all the files with the file extension .old, .new, and .tmp in your [WR4DefaultDatabases].
3. All completely processed import files. These are all the files with the file extension .processed in folder [WR4DefaultExports]\WR4ImportsPending.
4. All completely processed Nature Lister import files. These are all the files with the file extension .processed in folder [WR4DefaultExports]\Mobile.
5. All log files from WR4 Imports and WR database synchronisations These are all the files which contain Log# or Synchronisation# in their filenames and which have a file extension .txt in folder [WR4DefaultExports] .
Performing housekeeping
The Housekeeping function enables you to delete these temporary files and free up space on your hard drive.
To perform Housekeeping:
- Start WR4.
- Click on the Delete temporary files button.
- The Housekeeping form will appear:
- Several categories of temporary files exist, these can be selected individually:
WR4 downloads, these are program and species updates which WR4 has downloaded for you.
Temporary species update files, these are files created by WR4 when you apply a species update to your database. It is safe to delete these files once the update has been successfully completed.
Internal import files such as import error and duplicate files which have been completely and successfully imported.

Log files created by import and database synchronisation requests.
Select all the categories of temporary files you wish to delete, a list of the files which will be deleted is shown. Click the OK button to delete the files.
