Rules for entering Map References

Map references are entered as a north-west, south-east pair of co-ordinates which define an area. If the south-east co-ordinate is not provided it is set to the same co-ordinate as the north-west.

Map references are stored by Wildlife Recorder in latitude/longitude form.  Map references can optionally be entered in Latitude /longitude coordinates or according to the UK grid.

UK map references

Can be entered 6 (TM4567), 8 (TM450670) or 10 (TM45006700) character codes , as per Ordnance Survey maps.
E.g. Minsmere Reserve in Suffolk (north-west coordinate) TM45006700 or TM450670 or TM4567 (south-east coordinate) TM48006600 or TM480660 or TM4866.

Can be entered in any of the formats shown below:

52.5041N+4.7583W Decimal degrees
52:30.25N+4:45.5W Degrees and minutes
52:30:15N+4:45:30W Degrees, minutes and seconds
   
31.725637°+-110.880539° Decimal degrees, negative Latitude indicates south, negative Longitude indicates west.
31° 43.538'N+110° 52.832'W Degrees and minutes
31°43'32.29"N+110°52'49.94"W Degrees, minutes and seconds

Note:

The separator between latitude and longitude must be a +.
